I've been thinking about how reading a review of music is a secondary experience compared to the primary experience of hearing music. When studying history, reading a secondary source is a tertiary experience, compared to the secondary experience of reading a primary source and the primary experience of being there. No-one will respond to this text because it isn't the start of a conversation, and because no-one is here other than Mark and maybe Rick.
It was Frank Zappa who compared writing about music to dancing about architecture, possibly in the liner notes to You Are What You Is. It's a pity he didn't write about music more though, because I watch a lot of music theory videos in this pandemic era, and often find myself asking "What would Frank say to that?"
